When I first discovered Focusing way back in the mid eighties, I knew I had stumbled on a way of healing from emotional and psychological pain and suffering that was different from anything I had encountered and experienced before. All these years later, I am still so committed to this form of healing because it really gets to the core, the essence of what the blockage is inside a person. Rather than relying on external theories, Focusing is so personal and unique to the self that it really is revolutionary. The individual is the expert, not the therapist, which is not to say that you don't need someone skilled and compassionate in that role. It is simply that Focusing is a skill that can be learned and used outside of the counseling session, and I like this, because to me, anything that empowers the individual to do their own healing is something that needs to be supported. Also, I've seen so many miracles take place when a person finally meets a part of themselves that has been buried inside the body, often for many years. There are tears of recognition and bittersweet healing, the best kind of crying one can do.
Speaking of crying, the rain out here on the west coast has just stopped after days of unrelenting presence. There's a lightness in the air not unlike the release of pressure one feels after a good Focusing session.
